Words fail me at times… which is surprising if you know the family that I come from ;)  But these words from Dietrich Bonhoeffer say it much more eloquently than I ever could….

“There is nothing that can replace the absence of someone dear to us, and one should not even attempt to do so. One must simply hold out and endure it. At first that sounds very hard, but at the same time it is also a great comfort. For to the extent the emptiness truly remains unfilled one remains connected to the other person through it. It is wrong to say that God fills the emptiness. God in no way fills it but much more leaves it precisely unfilled and thus helps us preserve — even in pain — the authentic relationship. Further more, the more beautiful and full the remembrances, the more difficult the separation. But gratitude transforms the torment of memory into silent joy. One bears what was lovely in the past not as a thorn but as a precious gift deep within, a hidden treasure of which one can always be certain.”

*just a note to those that are regular followers… I’m in the process of changing things around here, so please excuse the mess of differentness going on on these here pages.  Getting set to move and getting ready for a brand change.  Very excited!

]]> http://www.novelphotoblog.com/2012/04/05/lee/feed/ 1 spring break 2012 http://www.novelphotoblog.com/2012/03/29/spring-break-2012/ http://www.novelphotoblog.com/2012/03/29/spring-break-2012/#comments Thu, 29 Mar 2012 23:49:41 +0000 admin http://www.novelphotoblog.com/?p=2782 The spring break plan?  Well, the plan was to throw the plan out —  no schedule other than to drive to the Grand Canyon and make it back within a week.  What could go wrong?  Let’s see… how about getting pulled over in nowheresville for failure to use a turn signal (“hi, Mr. Bored Policeman”)?   Or the cops showing up at our hotel room because they received a 911 call from our room (at least we know Louisa knows how to call for help).  Then there’s the dog almost running onto I-40 to chase down a raven.  Oh!  and how about Lee throwing up all over the front of the car in the middle of nowhere… and that’s just for starters!  All in all, it was a blast.  It was a trip the kids won’t soon forget and one that I’m so extremely thankful that we got to take together.  To see the beauty of God’s creation first hand and to show it to our children was a true blessing!  And I greatly believe that every family needs a road trip like this at least once in their lifetime.  There really is nothing like getting in the car together, not knowing what will happen, and just seeing where the journey will take you.  Now, the true test is whether or not you all survive each other ;)

Here are a few highlights of our trip.  I could have stayed and stared at the landscape all day if I didn’t have to worry about my son falling from the top of the canyon.  It absolutely looks like God took a paintbrush and painted the most glorious scene… I can only imagine what heaven looks like, since this is just a tiny piece of his creation in the scheme of things.  I have to agree with Emerson:

“All that I have seen teaches me to trust the creator for all that I have not seen.”


]]> http://www.novelphotoblog.com/2012/03/29/spring-break-2012/feed/ 3 let them be boys… but teach them to be gentlemen, too http://www.novelphotoblog.com/2012/03/15/let-them-be-boys-but-teach-them-to-be-gentlemen-too/ http://www.novelphotoblog.com/2012/03/15/let-them-be-boys-but-teach-them-to-be-gentlemen-too/#comments Thu, 15 Mar 2012 17:41:42 +0000 admin http://www.novelphotoblog.com/?p=2773 I love having a boy… he’s curious, adventurous, wild, and tender all rolled into one!  And sometimes, I am pleasantly surprised to see his gentlemanly side.  I see a boy that copies his father and will get my car door for me or hold the door for others..  the boy that carried his little sister’s friend up the stairs at the museum, because she was tired.  I see him wait for his sister as they ride off to school on their bikes.  He doesn’t always get it right, but when he does, I’m sure to point it out and praise him for it.  In a time where girls are told they can do everything the boys can do (and better), I think we are asking less and less of our little men.   I’ve heard, “Where are the real men?”  Chivalry is dead, they say.  Well, have we considered why?    If we’re all on an equal playing field, why should men be men?  I could go on, but this is already getting too long:)  As for me, I will never worry that my son emulates his father’s behavior… helpful and respectful to women and courteous to others; adventurous, and crazy, but most always an old-fashioned gentleman.
