I’m not going to start this off by saying that I always had a camera in my hand since I was a child – because I didn’t! It wasn’t at the top of my list. I can say, however, that I loved sitting in my great grandmother’s home and looking at the bazillion albums that she had. You could almost piece together the fabric of their lives, just by paging through those albums. Even though I had heard the stories behind those photos a hundred times, I just loved to hear them again and again. I loved to hear about their pet rabbit, or about the time she sent her sons off to war. As she or my Aunts would talk about them, you could see the memories they evoked. The mundane photos that they probably just snapped in an instant, served as reminders of the moments passed.
The stories behind the photos is what fuels my love for the art. I started taking photos of my family, thinking of those albums — what kind of stories would they have to share with their children? I’m sure they are sick of me snapping their photos… but I know that one day I’ll hopefully be sitting with my own great granddaughter, recounting the memories in my own photographs – because I know that every picture tells a story!
My journey to photography? It was when I saw another photographer’s dramatic and authentic children’s photos that I wanted to capture the same of my own children. I picked up the camera and never looked back. I’m a completely self-taught photographer… and I’m still learning daily! I love to capture the whimsy of childhood or those moments in between the posed frames. I am a wife, mother, and believer. And my story is still being written…..
